Problem Statement

As a result of the presence of computers and networks within the corporation, the enterprise depends on data storage. However, the company stores data for its systems and network using physical servers. The main issue at hand is the old architecture of physical servers that were set up in a period when the firm did not have the necessary measures of security that could safeguard its network against any threat. The suggestion is to move the data to a contemporary cloud storage system, which may significantly reduce the cybersecurity threat on stored data (by 50%) and decrease data storage expenses (by over 30%) in three months.

History

The evolution of data storage in POS systems has transformed from simple local hard-disk setups to fully internet-connected cloud networks. As businesses expanded, systems progressed from single-device storage to centralized servers, finance-integrated networks, and finally cloud-enabled infrastructures that support real-time access, scalability, and secure data management across multiple locations.

Current Status

Three point of sale (POS) solutions provide data to the server to account for all the units sold, those purchased, those available in stock and those that need to be purchased. The finance department obtains all transactional data from the server. The server connected with the internet is used by the firm to file its taxes for the business. It has been observed that the server is almost at capacity. There is a danger in it since it may disrupt the flow of operations. Another alternative should be sought in case the capacity of the server is exhausted. There are concerns over the legal obligations imposed by law regarding data protection.

Requirements

Proposed Solution

The suggested solution for the issue involves introducing a cloud server architecture within the firm. The suggested solution involves moving from a physical server architecture to a cloud server architecture. The connection between the POS system and the cloud server will be via a secured connection such as SSL/TLS. On the other hand, the connection between the POS system and the finance department will be through the secured access VPN/SSL. Cloud server architecture should have five important characteristics which include firewall, 24/7 monitoring, vulnerability management, access control, and disaster recovery.

Conclusion

In summary, the use of outdated physical servers, as well as the lack of knowledge about the field of information technologies, results in critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Such legacy solutions fail to provide an adequate level of protection against current types of cyberattacks, putting the company at risk of disruptions and financial losses. However, by transforming the infrastructure of the company and paying special attention to such concepts as cloud servers and cybersecurity governance, the organization is encouraged to find a more reliable solution.
